Dating Online : A Few Things To Keep in Mind
There are always risks in dating, especially when you date strangers (blind dates, first dates and dating online).
Online dating in particular poses some unique risks compared to traditional dating. When you first meet in person, you may gain a false sense of security. You may feel like after so many email exchanges and instant messaging that you know this person. You know their favorite actors, authors, bands, etc. But you don't necessarily know that they were completely honest in their conversations with you. Despite your previous online encounters, you do not really know them.
Date Detectives suggests that you use all the normal precautions you use with strangers. Do not give any more information to the individual than you would to a stranger you meet on the street.
Take your time, use your head and be careful!
Do not believe everything you read online
You can basically be anything you want to be online. You can lie all you want, and have a pretty good chance of getting away with it. That's a scary thought! Trust your gut feeling when dating online. If it seems too good to be true, it probably is.
Do not rush into things
Take your time to try to get to know the person online first. Make sure you keep the old e-mails to compare the information they give you. In one e-mail, they might tell you they work for the postal service, in another that they are a student - make sure you check out these inconsistencies.
Meet Your Online Date in a Very Public Place
The first time you meet in person, bring a friend. It's better to be safe than sorry.
Tell a friend
If you don't bring a friend a long on your date, then make sure someone knows who you are meeting and where you are going.
Never leave or go home with them
Take things slow! Remember, this person is a stranger for all intent and purposes. If you want to extend the date, then conduct it in a PUBLIC place.
Use a reputable online dating service
If someone makes you uncomfortable, report their behavior to your dating service right away. Save a copy of the message, and keep copies of anything you find offensive, so they can check it out.
